Rolling out our newsletter for February 2015!

It’s been such an exciting start to the year! We have so many aspirations and doable goals for 2015, and shall tackle them all monthly! There is just so much to do this year! We have a stunning, dedicated team who sincerely wish to get the wonderful word out there regarding all aspects of being vegan and living life in a true and non violent way!

January saw us finally setting up our brand new website as well as our new twitter account, which will see us rolling out news and wonderful articles daily. Please do join us on both forms of media , share, and lets get the word out there! We feel so blessed and so grateful to social media which today, both allows and encourages us to share our knowledge and compassion with everyone out there who has access to it! It was only a couple of decades ago that this was not a possibility leaving very little room for growth!

So very many people have not been reached yet, are denied free access to all of the health benefits, well being, and are therefore denied the opportunity of living life cruelty free in a cost effective manner.  One of the biggest problem and ‘grey’ areas still, is the lack of compassionate education at school levels. We firmly agree  that most are not taught about veganism at family level, leaving a huge void and a deep gap that slows down much faster  potential room for growth. One of the  biggest obstacles still lies with government to get on board this ‘concept’, who have the power to introduce valid reasoning to their communities and to curriculum’s within the schooling educational systems.

We have had the great pleasure to have communicated with so many people across the board who have diverse opinions, sharing insight as to where ‘felt’ current existing problems lie, and how change could effectively be made to run a little faster.  We agree that people cannot be forced to make the switch, they have to be able to understand why making the switch is imperative.  People want to make that connection, they want change but many still don’t quite fully know how to go about it.   People do want to embrace the concept fully however, can only do this when they have access to information.

Every individual connects on a variety of different levels, some connect to the cruelty of sentience and want to save as many animals as they possibly can from torture.  More than 60 billion animals are slaughtered each year not including sea creatures. Each and every vegan can spare over 200 lives per year!

Others connect to the health aspects , whilst some have been through great pain, suffering, and illness and have managed to reverse their symptoms. A vegan diet helps prevent and treats heart disease, reduces the risks of cancer and can actually reverse some cancers within three months, as cancer as well as other illnesses cannot survive in body with a healthy ph balance.  Going vegan can cure diabetes as well as high blood pressure etc.

Many go vegan because they know that it shall help environmental change. ‘Meat’ is not green. Livestock accounts for more than 9% of global carbon dioxide emissions, 40% of global methane emissions, and 65% of global nitrogen dioxide emissions.

Some are passionate about people. The worlds cattle alone consume a quantity of food that is equal to the calorie alone needed for 8.7 billion people which is more than the entire human population on earth! The more people that go vegan, the more hungry  we can feed!

Others are passionate about land. Did you know that the same amount of land can produce enough food that can feed 20 vegans or just one meat eater. 30% of land mass is dedicated to raising animals for food which is about the size of Asia.

Then there is water! Nearly 60% of all water goes to raising animals for food. It takes 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat, 815 gallons to produce 1 pound of chicken, 1630 gallons to produce one pound of pork, and a staggering  5000 gallons to produce just one pound of beef.

Some people make the switch for energy! Balanced vegan diets are naturally free of cholesterol laden and artery clogging animal products.  Whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables are so high in complex carbohydrates, that they supply the body with plenty of energising fuel!

Then some find the beauty aspect appealing. With no animal fat, weight goes down naturally and skin gets cleansed.  Going vegan  has a direct health effect and appearance on skin, hair and nails.

Others simply do it to avoid toxic chemicals. Nearly 95% of the pesticide residue in the meat eaters typical diet comes from meat, fish and dairy products.  Fish contains carcinogens and heavy metals . Meat and dairy are fortified with steroids and hormones.

Finally some find the discovery of taking their eating experience to a whole new level. Experience new foods, discover new tastes, experiment and enjoy!

All of the above are valid reasons to go vegan however, we firmly believe that it ought to be primarily about abolishing animal cruelty. Having said this though, we do respect the connection that individuals make in order to accomplish the ultimate goal of living ones life as a vegan. So with such a diverse culture of people throughout the world, we are highly excited and motivated. and fully embrace all reasoning in uniting everyone whom we believe to be heading in the same direction.  The links are strong!

Whilst all of these topics will be covered daily to continue to encourage, engage and unite, we shall also focus primarily on something quite different for February, which we shall update you on in our  March newsletter, should efforts pan out to be a success!

In the mean time we strongly recommend that you to talk about veganism, and all of it’s wonderful values and benefits to as many as you possibly can! May February bring you much joy and health, and may you be positive in everything that you do.  We encourage you to touch the lives of as many as you can! Blueberries for health!

Ever tasted a Blue Berry? Liked its tangy taste? Yes? Then you will absolutely love them even more once you finish reading this stuff. Before we proceed, allow us to give you a short introduction of Blue Berries, for those who have never tasted or seen one, and also for those who know them well.

Blue Berry is a fruit belonging to Vaccinium family with two well known types. First one is the wild or the low-bush Blue Berry bearing the scientific name ‘vaccinium angustifolium’ and the second one, the ‘vaccinium corymbosum’, is commonly known as the cultivated or the high-bush Blue Berry. There is one more type but that is not so well known. Its scientific name is ‘vaccinium pallidum’.


Ailments, causes and healing effect of Blue Berries:


Aging:

Leaving aside the genetic factor, for which there is no apparent solution, if we consider the effect of free radicals on aging, then Blue Berries bring you the brightest ray of hope, for they are laden with anti oxidants and rank number 1 in the world of anti oxidants. This is mainly due to presence of Anthocyanin, a pigment responsible for the blue color of the blue berries. The abundance of vitamin-C is also a big factor for this as well.


Urinary Tract Infection:

The building of colonies of certain bacteria like b-coli along the lining of the inner walls of urinary tract is responsible for this infection, resulting in inflammation, burning sensation during in passage of urine and other complications. Here, Blue Berries can be surprisingly beneficial. It has a compound formed of big polymer like heavy molecules which inhibits the growth of such bacteria. It also has some anti biotic properties which adds to this effect. These heavy and big molecules almost wash-off these bacteria along the tract, thereby preventing the infection. So far, this compound is found only in Cranberries and Blue Berries.


Eye Care & Macular Degeneration:

Blue Berry is one of the best alternatives for spectacles, contact-lenses, eye-drops, medicines and eye surgeries. They can prevent or delay all age related ocular problems like macular degeneration, cataract, myopia and hypermetropia, dryness and infections, particularly those pertaining to retina, due to their anti-oxidant properties. Macular degeneration is a serious problem where the retina of the eye degenerate gradually, ultimately leading to complete or partial blindness. No! I am certainly not telling you to put them in your eyes. Instead, you can just do well eating them. Blue Berries contain a special group of anti oxidants called Carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin etc.), Flavonoids (like rutin, resveritrol, quercetin etc.), in addition to others such as vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin A, selenium, zinc and phosphorus, which are very beneficial and essential for the ocular health.


Brain Function, Memory & Alzheimer’s disease:

Again, the anti oxidative properties of Blue Berries. The anthocyanin, the selenium, the vitamins A, B-complex, C and E, the zinc, sodium, potassium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese etc., among others, can prevent and heal neurotic disorders by preventing degeneration and death of neurons, brain-cells and also by restoring health of the central nervous system. It is hard to believe that these berries can also cure serious problems like Alzheimer’s disease to a great extent. They even heal damaged brain cells and neuron tissues and keep your memory sharp for a long-long time.


Constipation & Digestion:

While roughage (fiber) in Blue Berries keep away constipation (Of course, a single piece alone will not do. You need to eat a big handful of them), the vitamins, sodium, copper, fructose and acids improve digestion.


Cancer:

Blue Berries can prove to be bliss for the cancer patients, for they contain certain compounds like Pterostilbene (excellent remedy for colon and liver cancer) and Ellagic Acid which, in harmony with Anthocyanin and other anti oxidants like vitamin-C and copper, can do miracles to prevent and cure cancer.


Heart Disease:

The high fiber content, those brilliant anti oxidants and the ability to dissolve the ‘bad cholesterol’ make the Blue Berry an ideal dietary supplement to cure many heart diseases. It also strengthens the cardiac muscles.


Immunity:

Blue Berries, being very rich in anti oxidants like Anthocyanin, vitamin C, B complex, vitamin E, vitamin A, copper (a very effective immune builder and anti-bacterial), selenium, zinc, iron (promotes immunity by raising haemoglobin and oxygen concentration in blood) etc. boost up your immune system and prevent infections. Once your immunity is strong, you won’t catch colds, fever, pox and all such nasty viral and bacterial communicable diseases.


Other benefits & facts:

They keep you fresh, active, fit, sharp, close to nature and in a good mood, as they are  very good anti depressants. You also need not spend a lot on medicines, neither are there any side effects. Here, there is an interesting thing to know. The deeper the color of the Blue Berries, the more they are rich in anti oxidants and other medicinal values.
So, eat them until your tongue turns blue and live a healthy long and strong life !

Sprouted, Avocado & Potato Salad!

This is one of my absolute favourite salads, and I consider myself lucky to be able to put this together most times of the year, since we have easy availability to avocado! I very often make an entire bowl of potato salad, and have this convenience meal ready on hand in the refrigerator. This one is great for those sort of ‘lazy, pekkish’ moments, though once prepared is so convenient to eat. A delicious and satisfying meal that you can eat on it’s own and or add so very many other variations to it, without having to spend time cooking when time has run out! Healthy and visually appealing as well as creamy yummy.  If you love good food as much as I do, I think you shall appreciate the fast pace at which this one was put together. Please check out my ‘salad’ section for the recipe to my potato salad, so worth always having on hand!

We’ve all had those aha ‘moments’,  those late night evenings, that draw from an incredibly long and tiring though positive day, and we want to ‘raid’ the fridge for a quick fix! So why not make a jolly good job of it!

Since I already had the potato salad prepared, and a box full of ripe, creamy, yummy avocado’s just waiting for the picking, this literally took 2 minutes to put together, and satisfied my every craving. Even when I’m absolutely exhausted though, I do still love to create and have fun with how my meal looks, and I love to  photograph this for you in order to inspire. Just a simple idea. We eat with our eyes, and this gives great joy !

Everything in this salad is healthy, so don’t feel embarrassed going back for seconds! Healthy oils, good omega’s, and a wonderful balance of fruit and veg.

To make for one:

1 ripe and creamy avocado, sliced into slivers and fanned out on your plate.

4 or 5 heaped tablespoons of ready made potato salad.

small handful of sprouts

Sprinkle of oregano on the avo

Sprinkle of cayenne pepper on your potato salad

A drizzle of truffle oil on your sprouts.

A crack of black salt

Egg replacements

Have a favourite recipe that you’d like to make egg-free? It’s easy! There are a variety of things you can use depending on the type of recipe. So very many are still struggling with the concept of replacing eggs in their cooking.  This ought to make it a lot easier for you ! Try it and see how great you start feeling!

Baked Goods.

You can use any of the following substitutions for cakes, cookies, muffins, breads and other baked goods which use eggs as a binder (to hold them together). Some of these may change the taste of your recipe, so pick the one that would work best (for example, banana goes great in pancakes and recipes with chocolate or vanilla, flax seeds go well in nutty recipes, apple sauce in fruity recipes).

 1 egg = 1/2 banana (mashed)

1 egg = 1 T ground flax seeds soaked in 3 T water

1 egg = 1/4 cup apple sauce

1 egg = 1 T oil + 2 t baking powder + 2 T water

1 egg = 1/4 cup pumpkin puree

1 egg = 1 T of chia seed to 3 T of warm water

1 egg = 1.5 t Ener-G Egg Replacer + 2 T water (see below)

Ener-G Egg Replacer is a balanced blend of different flours, starches and leaveners, and works very well replacing eggs in any recipe without affecting the taste. Note that the powder must be mixed with the water prior to adding it into the recipe. It is inexpensive and available at most health food stores, vegetarian grocery stores, and also online.

Quiche and Custards.

For recipes that are very “eggy” and not fluffy, purée 1/4 cup soft tofu (unsweetened) per egg in the recipe. Make sure it’s well blended to avoid chunkiness in the final product.

Breakfast Scramble and “Egg” Salad.

Crumble about 1/3 cup of medium firm tofu in place of each egg in recipe.

When you get used to the idea it’s easy! Put it to practice!  If you are not already vegan consider going vegan.  Kick the eggs out of your plan altogether! Go healthy, cut out ‘unhealthy cholesterol and cruelty from your life! It really is that easy – the choice is yours.

How to get your vegan pantry started.

Stocking a vegan pantry is easy. Going vegan has never been easier than it is right now!

If you care enough about animals, our environment, and your health, then you are on your way to going vegan, and it’s never been as easy as it is right now! It’s up to you to make the switch and do what you believe is moral and just. We want to encourage you as much as we possibly can with information that shall set you off in the right direction.

With a full on vegan pantry in play and the right mind set, you simply cannot go wrong! Remember to give your palette a couple of weeks to adjust and get used to not consuming animal products. Once your palettes have been ‘reset’ to clean and healthy whole foods, you shall never look back again!
This list may not be a surprise to someone who is already vegan however, it can be a great resource to someone who is a lacto-vegetarian trying to become vegan. It is also a great resource for just about anyone looking to create healthy and delicious meals though . Having the right and basic ingredients in your pantry means you can cook a healthy meal, hopefully in a short time after you come home from a busy and tiring workday. Being vegan is not difficult but it takes a little effort on our part, especially when we are starting out. A vegan pantry does not contain any animal products, yet you can make wonderful meals with what you have on hand.

Egg Replacer Suggestions: (Baked goods made with eggs come out chewy and moist but they come at a very high cost, especially to chickens who live in very inhumane conditions and are subjected to pain and suffering. Eggs also come at a high cost to humans as they are loaded with antibiotics and hormones and are high in cholesterol. Eggs can also carry salmonella).


It is possible to make chewy and moist baked goods without using eggs. The measures below correspond to 1 egg. If you’re using more, adjust accordingly:


* 1 teaspoon soy flour + 1 tablespoon water
* 1/2 mashed banana (for baking sweet goods)
* 4 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
* 1/4 cup pureed tofu with little added water
* 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds (flax meal) + 3 tablespoons water
* Store bought egg substitutes.

Choose what works for you and your family. The ultimate goal is to eat healthy, natural and unprocessed food that is good for us, saves animals and improves our environment.

A good reason to go vegan

Life for animals on factory farms isn’t pretty. Forget those idyllic barnyard portrayals in children’s books. Those places do not exist.

Each year on today’s factory farms, over eight billion animals are confined in windowless sheds, tiny barren crates, and filthy wire cages. These animals are mutilated without painkillers, denied veterinary care, and ultimately slaughtered. Sadly, they have  no legal protections. Simply put, life for them is a hell you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.

While the overwhelming majority of “food” animals live and die in misery and deprivation, a lucky few have escaped their cruel fates after being rescued by animal advocates. These are their stories:

Hope (life on a factory farm) :

Her story is nothing short of a miracle. Hope’s life now consists of dust baths, perching in trees, and gossiping with her girlfriends in the coop. But it wasn’t always this way. Hope was found on a pile of dead birds on an egg factory farm. She was barely alive when a young rescuer saved her life.

Approximately 250 million hens like Hope are imprisoned every year on  egg factory farms, where they are denied  everything that comes naturally to them.

They are crammed into barren wire cages, where each bird gets less space than an iPad to live her entire life.

They are unable to spread their wings, walk, or forage for food. When they are just babies, they have their beaks seared off with a hot blade. This is an extremely painful procedure and many chickens die from starvation because it’s too excruciating to even eat.

The males never have a chance. Because they don’t lay eggs, they are killed soon after hatching. Most  are ground up alive, while others are gassed or suffocated.

Olive (crammed in a crate on a factory farm) :

Olive is one brave, lucky lady. She saved her own life by making a daring and dangerous escape from a slaughterhouse.

Pigs just like Olive are treated mercilessly on factory farms.

They are kept pregnant and imprisoned inside tiny metal gestation crates so small they can’t turn around, lie down comfortably, or engage in any natural behaviour.

This farming practice is so cruel that many pigs go mad from utter lack of stimulation. Hour after hour, day after day, they have nothing to do but bite the bars or bang their heads against the sides of the cages.

Shortly after birth, piglets are taken away from their mothers, and endure mutilations without painkillers, including having their tails chopped off and testicles ripped out of their bodies.

Having been rescued and taken to a sanctuary, Olive now lives a life of leisure, taking mud baths (okay, rolling in the mud), and hanging with her best friends.

Ophelia (crippled from unnatural weight gain) :

Ophelia is the best girlfriend in the world. She’ll keep you company while you eat, sit quietly and listen to all your troubles, and even accompany you to the spa for some dust bathing.

Seriously though, like us, chickens form strong bonds with their friends and families, are inquisitive, and enjoy their natural surroundings.

Sadly, like Ophelia once was, “broiler chickens”—a term given to birds raised for their ‘meat’—are packed in filthy, overcrowded sheds and bred to grow so quickly that many suffer health defects, such as crippling leg disorders and heart attacks.

How fast do they grow? Think of a two- year-old baby weighing 350 pounds!

Dylan (imprisoned in a tiny crate on a ‘veal’ farm)  :

Dylan is a lovable, easygoing guy. He enjoys soaking up the sun, chomping down on carrots, and hanging out with his friends.

But life wasn’t always great for this gentle giant. Born on a dairy farm, Dylan was dragged away from his mum after just one day to be sold for ‘veal’. He was found tied to a post, lying in his own feces, when a compassionate couple arranged his rescue.

On a veal farm, Dylan would have been chained by his neck in a tiny crate barely larger than his body before being sent to slaughter at only 16 weeks old.

Dairy cows, like Dylan’s mother, also live miserable lives. Like all mammals, cows produce milk for their babies. In order to keep producing milk, they are artificially and repeatedly impregnated (in other words – raped). They are kept in tiny stalls and have hardly any room to move around. After about four years, they are sold to slaughter.

Sensitive sea life (trapped for a slow and painful death) :

Do fish feel pain? Of course they do. Modern science now tells us that fish experience pain in much the same way mammals do. They can also feel pleasure. In fact, fish release a hormone called oxytocin, which is the same hormone released in humans when they’re falling in love.

But life in the sea isn’t all about love stories. Commercial fishing boats cruelly catch billions—yes, billions—of fish every year.

And fish are not the only victims of industrialized fishing. Dolphins, turtles, and other marine wildlife become ensnared in mile-long nets.

Other fish are raised in overcrowded, dirty, and disease-ridden factory farms.

Is ‘Humane meat’ OK?

Hardly. The extremely small percentage of animals raised on small-scale farms may be treated a little better, but the reality is that many of these animals are still separated from their families and mutilated without painkillers, and their deaths are always the same: bloody, violent, and completely unnecessary.

What about ‘cage-free’ eggs?

Almost anything is better than the nightmare of factory farming, but sadly, cage-free doesn’t mean cruelty-free. The truth is that cage-free and free-range hens are  crammed in overcrowded sheds, debeaked, and all killed once their egg production declines.

Going vegan is the most sensible choice to make to stop cruelty.

The world is vegan if you want it to be.

We are almost half way through January 2015 already, and with this fast rolling out pace yet another year shall be over with a blink of an eye!  So let’s make it a good one. Let’s say and do what we set out to do in the first place. Everyone loves animals and the best that we can do for them is to go vegan. This is the very best ‘justice’ that we can do for them. We have high hopes for the year to come and so much to do, to aspire to, and to accomplish.

Wishing you all a successful 2015 for the animals . May you be safe where ever you are, and may you continue to inspire and to keep others from harm. Making the decision to stop exploiting non-humans is the most profound and meaningful act of kindness that you shall ever make in your life. This may seem a little more daunting for some than it is for others however it’s easy once you know how! As a peaceful growing community we are here to reach out, and to support, and to learn from one another. We feel that everyone has something relative to contribute in order for others to grow closer toward veganism. Please do share with us your wonderful stories . We shall continue to fill our page with vegan related topics.  This is a community activist page where many raw issues shall be posted that we feel essential to expose . Not all of it may be ‘nice’ to see. Nothing that the world ‘ought’ to see or know about shall be held back. Sadly very many issues may be despairing to witness however, the truth is what we seek, and the truth is what we must ‘see’ in order to be able to reverse, rectify and cure very many issues. Vegans please step forward and assist those who ‘want’ to change though don’t quite know how or may be ‘afraid’ of change. We know how much they shall love the decision once they see ‘clarity’. Awareness is key after all, and this empowers one to grow intellectually in order to make the reasonable conclusion that veganism is the only answer to all of the worlds problems today.  It is with this mindset that real difference will naturally occur and take shape.

Our notes and videos sections are both inspiring and informative, who’s ‘sole’ purpose is to ‘plant’ the ‘ seeds’. 2014 was a magical year for us at ~ Active Vegan ~ , as we witnessed an increased interest from both vegans and non vegans alike. The growing trend toward veganism as a life style choice is immensely encouraging to observe, as we feel the spirit rising all around us. People are becoming much more aware and in-tune with this choice.

2014 has also brought on board in house Chef ‘Vegan Chef On The Run’ , to whom we are immensely grateful , for her time to cook, to photograph, and to document her own inspirations daily for all to share. ~ Active Vegan ~ has also inspired our youth with the opening of 2 brand new pages targeting both young and ‘younger’ alike, and we would like to wish them both continued success in growth throughout 2015. A heartfelt thanks to our moderators for their continued efforts and time to do good.

May 2015 show humanity in that everyone both human and non deserve ‘basic fundamental rights’, the right to live, the right to be free, and the right to be respected.
