Everyday, we read, we hear about climate change, methane Co2, how over 51% of this noxious gas, is derived from the animal agricultural sect. We hear how the ice caps and glaciers are melting, how we are destroying the forests, how we are acidifying the oceans, poisoning our waterways, polluting our air, and destroying the fundamental ecosystems that we have all become so reliant upon, and whole species who are going extinct.

There are solutions, we’re not at a complete and utter loss – there are phenomenal alternative ways we can refine our lives, to improve and change the tragic situation, as South Africans we are capable of embracing the concept of going green, to start living consciously, to reverse this violence, violence to animals, violence to ourselves, and violence to our mother earth.

Brain Food.

It might seem like common sense to most of us, but a new report confirms that our eating habits affects the health of our brains.

This new study, published online in Neurology, found that eating healthy is the best way to preserve memory and mental sharpness as you age. The study followed almost 28,000 adults aged 55 and older from 40 different countries. Researchers rated participants’ diets over five years, giving higher points for fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and lower points for red meat and processed foods.

The Study Results Were Striking

The healthiest eaters were 24% less likely to have cognitive decline (memory loss, reasoning ability); those with the worst diets were most likely to have cognitive decline.

The “healthy eating” scale used by researchers had fruits and vegetables at the healthiest end of the scale and  ‘meat’ and deep-fried foods at the unhealthiest end.

There Was No Magic Ingredient

The researchers from McMaster University determined that there wasn’t one magic food or ingredient, but that it was eating a healthier diet overall. Study author, Professor Andrew Smyth, told Forbes:

“The consumption of ‘healthy’ choices may be beneficial, but the effect may be lost/reduced with the consumption of ‘unhealthy’ choices. For example, the beneficial effect of fruit may be lost if prepared with high amounts of fats or sugars. Our data suggest that an overall healthy plant based diet is more important than the consumption of any one particular food.”

What We Know About the Link Between Diet and Memory

This study adds to the growing body of research that shows that what we eat affects how well our brains age. We asked medical experts in the field to weigh in on the new findings.

“Choosing fruits and vegetables over meats, dairy products, and eggs will cut the risk of serious memory problems,” says Physicians Committee president Neal Barnard, M.D. “Evidence has shown that what is good for the heart is good for the brain.” Dr. Barnard is a clinical researcher and author of Power Foods for the Brain.

Matthew Lederman, MD, medical advisor to Forks Over Knives, commented, “In general, any dietary change that increases your consumption of whole plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains,  will positively impact your brain health.”

The study was published online before print in Neurology.

What are you waiting for – go vegan, what an incredible word.

‘Game’ exploitation – another reason to go vegan.

Wildlife for sale – that is the site that this picture was copied from. To be clear all animals are exploited. Those without voices – innocent individuals shall always be exploited for as long as you allow them to be. In South Africa – massive shift from exploiting domesticated animals to exploiting wildlife has been on the rise for decades and gaining momentum –  demand for It from abroad and the rise in exploitive associations and stakeholders internally – including South Africa’s own Deputy has resulted in the wildlife crises that she and other countries face today –  focus has shifted primarily on how to make a quick ‘ching’ – ranchers, game hunters and agricultural farmers continue to punt their violent business to the media and onto the public.

Gullible followers are swooped up in the mass hysteria – as they themselves continue to violate animal rights – whether it be a dog, or a sheep, or a chicken or a fish, or a buck, or a child etc. – exploiting animals shall always continue whilst you yourself choose to consume and wear them. You can no longer rely on welfare organisations and business corporations, suits and ties, governments and scientific experimental labs to make those changes for you. Cruelty shall simply shift from one specie to another as it has done over millennia – taking full circle – getting absolutely no where fast. You and only you can make that change –  by refusing to be a part of animal exploitation – then educating others to do the same.

Ranchers, hunters etc. shall always drive exploitation to where the ‘ching’ is – whether it be cows, pigs, geese, buck, elephant, lions, rhino – it doesn’t really matter to them who they exploit – as long as it is lucrative business for them. These adrenalin junkies get away with shooting their bullets because they can – because you allow them to and because you support their follies – dwindling numbers of wildlife, increasing figures in hunting and poaching, spurring demand for horn and other body parts, increasing violence, disrupting volatile ecosystems, destruction of land – air – water, violating poor impoverished communities, punting slaughter facilities – taxidermists – butcheries, violating both human rights and rights that all animals ought to have. These are the demons in today’s world – in todays society – the very same people who continue to say that they fight for conservation, who say that they care, who say that they love animals, who say they care about animal welfare – they don’t – let’s all be honest – they only care about the ‘ching’ in their pockets – and you who continue to support them – care about your own palette pleasure. You can only say that you really care when you stop exploiting animals completely – until then you are part of a vicious circle encouraging the rise in violence. You are wasting your time fighting for lost cause until you go vegan – until the world goes vegan – wilfully and conscientiously choosing to live non-violently for them – for yourself – for future generations – for the planet.

Got the facts on milk?

For years we have understood that abstaining from red meat is an important way to avoid disease, and tread lighter on the planet. Growing research now shows that avoiding dairy products is just as key, after all, it does come from the same cow, and it certainly isn’t natural.

Got the facts on milk?

The Journal of the American Medical Association – Pediatrics published an editorial that might surprise you. The authors, Dr. David Ludwig and Dr. Walter Willett – both of whom are physicians and professors at the Harvard Medical School – strongly question the consumption of cows’ milk, even by children.

Quoting their article, “Dairy milk evolved to promote the growth of grazing animals at high risk for predation when small. The consequences of lifetime human exposure to the growth factors in milk have not been well studied. Milk consumption increases serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 1, an anabolic hormone linked to prostate and other cancers. In addition, modern industrial methods maintain dairy cows in active milk production throughout successive pregnancies, resulting in a milk supply with high levels of reproductive hormones.”

They cite a large body of research to support their claims. Adequate calcium, they point out, is easily obtained from other sources. They note that dairy consumption is not protective against bone fractures and that it is strongly correlated with prostate cancer. As Drs. Ludwig and Willett say, we’d do much better getting our nutrients from diets that include green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and adequate protein.

None of this is news. That this advice is appearing in one of the world’s preeminent pediatrics  journals highlights its importance.

Safeguarding personal health, of course, is not the only good reason to avoid dairy products.

Dairy cattle, like all cattle, are surprisingly heavy polluters.

Cows belch a lot of methane ¨C by most estimates 100 to 200 liters per day. Because methane is some 34 to 86 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (depending mostly on whether one counts its effects over 100 or 20 years, respectively), this adds up to a huge impact on the climate. In fact, when one does the arithmetic, this amounts to about the same global warming effect, per cow, as a car.

Cows also produce a lot of manure. According to the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food, better than 2 cubic feet of the stuff a day. Besides polluting our waterways and our drinking water, this manure is responsible for enormous amounts of ammonia pollution. Indeed, the majority of all ammonia pollution comes from cows. Much of this becomes nitrous oxide in the atmosphere, a gas which, at 300 times the effect of CO2, dwarfs even methane in its global warming potential molecule for molecule.

There is also indirect pollution involved in dairy production. Most important among those is the effects of corn and soy production. The great majority of corn and soy in North America and elsewhere is grown to feed animals. This is incredibly inefficient all around and cows are just about as inefficient as inefficient can be. According to Vaclav Smil’s careful analysis, some 95% of the protein taken in by cattle is lost to humans. We get only 5% of what we fed them back. This is made all the worse since it requires enormous amounts of fertilizers and pesticides to produce all of that corn and soy. Much of the fertilizer runs off into water ways and creates dead zones in lakes and bays and even the Gulf of Mexico.

All in all, dairy, like other animal agriculture, is highly polluting and highly wasteful. The fact is that dairy, like beef, is among the worst polluters, animal per animal, on earth.

And then, there’s the plight of the cattle themselves. Like humans, cows have to give birth in order to produce milk. So, the cows are artificially inseminated once each year. Nine months later, a calf is born. Almost always, 24 to 48 hours after that, the calf is taken away. This causes great emotional pain both for the mother and for her offspring. Former cattle rancher Helen Weston describes how the mothers react: “The cow is an exceptionally loving and gentle creature. She cries for days when her calf is taken from her. It is a pitiful sound, a pitiful sound.”

Female calves are usually allowed to live. She’ll be raised to be another dairy cow. If the calf is male, however, he may well be quickly killed. Or he may be raised for beef. More likely, though, he’ll be sent to a veal farm instead. At the veal farm, he’ll probably be fed an iron-deficient gruel so that the meat will be pale.  He’ll likely be chained by the neck in a tiny stall – with no room to walk or even turn. At 16 weeks of age, he will be sent to slaughter. The veal industry would not exist were it not for the ‘surplus’ (i. e., male) dairy calves.

Dairy cows are bred to produce unnatural amounts of milk. Annual milk production per cow has more than doubled since the 1940s. The cows routinely suffer calcium deficiencies and painful mastitis. And, while their natural lives would span some 25 years, they are sent to slaughter before their fifth birthday. They become hamburger and “processed” beef.

We don’t need dairy. It does a great deal more harm than good. So, eat like the doctors from Harvard suggest. Adopt a high quality diet filled with beans and grains and leafy greens and nuts and seeds. Your body will be better off. The world will be better off. And fewer cows will suffer so.

Switching from dairy to vegan alternatives.

Switching from dairy to healthy plant based alternatives is easier than you think! All you really need to know is that there are hundreds of  alternatives out there! Many people are still are not aware of this as yet. We have spoken to so many people who have no knowledge of healthy milk alternatives, and still are not aware of the health risks associated with the consumption of dairy.

It has been estimated that 75% of today’s modern population is allergic to dairy! The dairy industries around the world are responsible for many debilitating illnesses caused to man through the push and continued advocacy of dairy products. False and misleading advertising campaigns for profit gain and consumption has been the cause of immune system breakdowns, excess mucous increase, allergen rise, increase in osteoporosis, bone fractures, operations, hypertension, obesity, heart attacks, cancer, flu’s and pneumonia, dementia, arthritis, herpes simplex, diabetes, high blood pressure. The list goes on and on and yet the ‘dairy’ industry continues to punt their toxins onto unsuspecting humans as humans demand it. It a vicious cycle of violence.

We cannot wait for anyone to change the laws. We cannot wait for anyone to make the change for us. We cannot wait for ‘welfare’ groups and associations who continue to promote ‘happy exploitation’ – who punt their animal products to us. No such thing exists. Animals are being exploited and they are running out of time.  We have to take the information that we have today and run with it, we have to make the change ourselves. It has become logical that we have to start thinking for ourselves.  What we do with this information is up to us, and those who are willing to listen and make the switch shall benefit soonest!

With an ever increasing population of 7 billion people around the globe – rising exponentially, 55 billion land animals are being tortured annually currently. They are being raped, mishandled, bred, and chopped up solely for profit margins, and promoted for unnecessary and detrimental palette pleasures. The  tragedy that is happening to nonhuman beings is outcry of grief. Governments are doing nothing to stop this. Those figures are growing rapidly. Animals are slaughtered at an alarming rate and placed onto industrial conveyor belts that are moving faster than the speed of light to keep up with public demand. No care is given to them, they have become profit making machines with numbers worse in volume to that of Auschwitz.

Antibiotics are pumped into them, chemicals are added to their foods, and absolute garbage is being fed to them in order to save on costs. This in turn is being consumed by those who choose to eat and drink it. Milk is not only not nutritious, it is toxic, it is filled with antibiotics, chemicals, blood and puss, but most of all it is fuelled with absolute cruelty and violence – breaking down peoples immune systems – damaging the ecosystems that we have become so reliant upon.

There are hundreds of healthy alternatives out there, there are healthy solutions and everyone deserves the right to this knowledge. Try alternative products made of Soy milk, Oat milk, Coconut milk, Almond milk, Flax milk, Quinoa milk, Hazelnut milk, Rice milk, Cashew milk, 7 Grain milk, Sunflower milk, Hemp milk. You may not be open to such alternatives at first, or they may taste a little odd to some, but you shall never know until you try them! You can find wonderful vanilla or chocolate versions, try those too! All it takes is knowing that these are out there, trying them, and knowing that whilst you take dairy out of your diet,  give yourself a 2-3 week allowance for your palette to adjust! Once you have made up your mind that you no longer want to be a part of this cruelty, and you are concerned about maintaining your health, as well as the health of the environment, the switch is so easy! You shall never go back again as your body becomes ‘cleaner’, healthier and is attracted to cleaner ‘fuel sources’.

There is no need to support the dairy industry. We do not benefit from dairy at all. Yet so many continue to suffer. Know your rights, acknowledge those who are continually abused – do something meaningful about it, give your own bodies and minds a chance to heal to become healthier. Every single recipe that you are so used to making using ‘dairy’ can be replaced by a non dairy alternative – every single one! (cheeses, milks, yoghurts etc).  A great hint when looking for recipes on the net is to type ‘vegan’ before each recipe request – that shall point you in the right direction. Make the switch today, right now, and share your knowledge with everyone!

Rolling out our newsletter for February 2015!

It’s been such an exciting start to the year! We have so many aspirations and doable goals for 2015, and shall tackle them all monthly! There is just so much to do this year! We have a stunning, dedicated team who sincerely wish to get the wonderful word out there regarding all aspects of being vegan and living life in a true and non violent way!

January saw us finally setting up our brand new website as well as our new twitter account, which will see us rolling out news and wonderful articles daily. Please do join us on both forms of media , share, and lets get the word out there! We feel so blessed and so grateful to social media which today, both allows and encourages us to share our knowledge and compassion with everyone out there who has access to it! It was only a couple of decades ago that this was not a possibility leaving very little room for growth!

So very many people have not been reached yet, are denied free access to all of the health benefits, well being, and are therefore denied the opportunity of living life cruelty free in a cost effective manner.  One of the biggest problem and ‘grey’ areas still, is the lack of compassionate education at school levels. We firmly agree  that most are not taught about veganism at family level, leaving a huge void and a deep gap that slows down much faster  potential room for growth. One of the  biggest obstacles still lies with government to get on board this ‘concept’, who have the power to introduce valid reasoning to their communities and to curriculum’s within the schooling educational systems.

We have had the great pleasure to have communicated with so many people across the board who have diverse opinions, sharing insight as to where ‘felt’ current existing problems lie, and how change could effectively be made to run a little faster.  We agree that people cannot be forced to make the switch, they have to be able to understand why making the switch is imperative.  People want to make that connection, they want change but many still don’t quite fully know how to go about it.   People do want to embrace the concept fully however, can only do this when they have access to information.

Every individual connects on a variety of different levels, some connect to the cruelty of sentience and want to save as many animals as they possibly can from torture.  More than 60 billion animals are slaughtered each year not including sea creatures. Each and every vegan can spare over 200 lives per year!

Others connect to the health aspects , whilst some have been through great pain, suffering, and illness and have managed to reverse their symptoms. A vegan diet helps prevent and treats heart disease, reduces the risks of cancer and can actually reverse some cancers within three months, as cancer as well as other illnesses cannot survive in body with a healthy ph balance.  Going vegan can cure diabetes as well as high blood pressure etc.

Many go vegan because they know that it shall help environmental change. ‘Meat’ is not green. Livestock accounts for more than 9% of global carbon dioxide emissions, 40% of global methane emissions, and 65% of global nitrogen dioxide emissions.

Some are passionate about people. The worlds cattle alone consume a quantity of food that is equal to the calorie alone needed for 8.7 billion people which is more than the entire human population on earth! The more people that go vegan, the more hungry  we can feed!

Others are passionate about land. Did you know that the same amount of land can produce enough food that can feed 20 vegans or just one meat eater. 30% of land mass is dedicated to raising animals for food which is about the size of Asia.

Then there is water! Nearly 60% of all water goes to raising animals for food. It takes 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat, 815 gallons to produce 1 pound of chicken, 1630 gallons to produce one pound of pork, and a staggering  5000 gallons to produce just one pound of beef.

Some people make the switch for energy! Balanced vegan diets are naturally free of cholesterol laden and artery clogging animal products.  Whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables are so high in complex carbohydrates, that they supply the body with plenty of energising fuel!

Then some find the beauty aspect appealing. With no animal fat, weight goes down naturally and skin gets cleansed.  Going vegan  has a direct health effect and appearance on skin, hair and nails.

Others simply do it to avoid toxic chemicals. Nearly 95% of the pesticide residue in the meat eaters typical diet comes from meat, fish and dairy products.  Fish contains carcinogens and heavy metals . Meat and dairy are fortified with steroids and hormones.

Finally some find the discovery of taking their eating experience to a whole new level. Experience new foods, discover new tastes, experiment and enjoy!

All of the above are valid reasons to go vegan however, we firmly believe that it ought to be primarily about abolishing animal cruelty. Having said this though, we do respect the connection that individuals make in order to accomplish the ultimate goal of living ones life as a vegan. So with such a diverse culture of people throughout the world, we are highly excited and motivated. and fully embrace all reasoning in uniting everyone whom we believe to be heading in the same direction.  The links are strong!

Whilst all of these topics will be covered daily to continue to encourage, engage and unite, we shall also focus primarily on something quite different for February, which we shall update you on in our  March newsletter, should efforts pan out to be a success!

In the mean time we strongly recommend that you to talk about veganism, and all of it’s wonderful values and benefits to as many as you possibly can! May February bring you much joy and health, and may you be positive in everything that you do.  We encourage you to touch the lives of as many as you can! Be an ~ Active Vegan ~ every second of your day!
