How does Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium benefit our bodies ?

All three contain chemicals that help promote muscle relaxation and assist in nerve transmission. They help maintain a healthy blood pressure. People suffering from hypertension are highly recommended to include foods rich in potassium in their diet – Potassium (K) is also vital for other body functions that include proper functioning of the nervous system, kidneys, heart, and the musculoskeletal system. Potassium deficiency, or hypokalemia, can cause fatigue, problems in muscle coordination, weakness, etc. Foods high in potassium are beneficial for diabetic patients, as they help in proper functioning of the pancreas. Very high levels of potassium, or hyperkalemia, can cause health problems like kidney failure, so everything in moderation. Fresh fruits and vegetables make some of the best foods that are high in potassium.

A comprehensive list of such foods is given below:

•Brussels Sprouts
•Kiwi Fruit
•Honeydew Melons
•Pears (fresh)
•Baked Potatoes
•Canned Sauce
•Winter Squash

Though Calcium (Ca) is necessary for maintaining healthy bones and teeth, it also helps to regulate blood pressure. It also helps in healing of wounds, and in producing key enzymes that aid in digestion and metabolism. Adequate intake of calcium is a must for people of all age groups. The amount of calcium required by the body, increases with increasing age. As we grow older, our bodies need more calcium for maintaining strong bones. There are no specific symptoms associated with calcium deficiency. Just like with any other mineral, the intake of calcium should not exceed beyond our body’s requirement of the mineral.

Here’s a list of common foods that are rich sources of calcium:

•Brazil nuts
•Collard greens
•Instant oats
•Sesame seeds
•Swiss chard

Magnesium (Mg) is an essential mineral that plays an important role in metabolism. Many people are unaware of the significance of magnesium and hence, suffer from health problems related to magnesium deficiency. Almost 300 bio-chemical reactions take place in the body with the help of magnesium. Magnesium is necessary for production of energy in the body. It also helps to regulate blood pressure in a natural way. Magnesium plays a key role in protein synthesis, and synthesis of enzymes. Symptoms of low magnesium, include heart palpitation, fatigue, fibromyalgia, kidney stones, osteoporosis, tics and twitches, diabetes, etc. To get the required amounts of magnesium, one should consume raw food rather than processed food.

Given here is a list of common foods that are rich in magnesium:

•Black beans
•Soy milk
•Whole grains
•Whole wheat bread

Eat well, do good and stay vegan.

Tamarind, uniquely beneficial – all vegan.

Tamarind is the edible fruit of  the Tamarindus Indica Tree. While it’s native to the tropical regions of Africa, the pulp has been used in cuisines across the world.

The young fruit is sour, but once ripe, it has a sweet taste that’s used to flavour drinks, jams, ice cream, and an array of snacks. Tamarind is ubiquitous in India, parts of Africa, and Asia.  Unripe fruit is sometimes turned into pulp and used for pickling.   In India, it’s also used in curries and chutneys.

Raw tamarind is high in several B vitamins, as well as iron, magnesium, and potassium — all vital to human health.  It’s a condiment. It’s a spice. No, it’s a bean. The “Manila sweet,” as the tamarind is sometimes called, is all of the above. Tamarind seed extract, which is deliciously tangy, is one of the most highly prized foods in Asian and Indian cuisine.

Each 100 grams of tamarind contain impressive amounts of essential nutrients, including 36% of the daily recommended value in thiamin, 35% in iron, 23% in magnesium, and 16% in phosphorus. Other prominent benefits include niacin, calcium, vitamin C, copper, fiber, and pyridoxine, proving it to be a uniquely beneficial food.

Traditional uses for tamarind include relief from stomach and digestive ailments, fevers, sore throat, rheumatism, inflammation, and sunstroke.

Dozens of tamarind recipes, from simple to complex, are available on the internet for those desiring a fresh, unique culinary opportunity. An easy one is tamarind water, used in many Indian and Asian dishes: Just soak pre-packaged tamarind paste in water, strain it, and add as part of your liquid requirements to stir fries, sauces, or curries. However, consume tamarind in moderation because it contains fructose, which may be harmful to your health in excessive amounts.

Deliciously tangy and one of the most highly prized natural foods in South Asia, the tamarind – the melodic name of which comes from the Persian “tamar-I-hind,” meaning “date of India” – is gaining recognition and appreciation throughout the world. Said to be native to Africa, this exotic fruit grows on exceptionally tall trees of the fabaceae family, such as peas, beans, and other legumes, mostly in the warmer, dryer areas of Asia, Mexico, and India.

Tamarind trees produce an abundance of long, curved, brown pods filled with small brown seeds, surrounded by a sticky pulp that dehydrates naturally to a sticky paste. The pods look a bit like huge, brown, overly mature green beans.

It’s better to purchase tamarind when it’s fresh and still in the pod. Refrigeration is the best way to preserve the freshness for up to several months.

Figs – eat more fruit to stay healthy.

New Compounds in Figs Kills Breast Cancer Cells: Researchers have just discovered nine new compounds in figs which are toxic to breast cancer cells, killing over 50% of them at concentrations that, in one case, approached the potency of the chemo drug cis-platinum. Although these new compounds are in very early stage research, it is already known that figs are a potent anti-cancer fruit. Figs deliver the highest concentrations of cancer-fighting polyphenols (2100 mg of polyphenols per 100 grams fruit) of any known fruit except dates. And this isn’t just theoretical: one recent study on healthy people showed that eating 40 grams of figs actually doubled their bloods’ antioxidant capacity within one hour! As for cancer prevention, fig extracts have proven toxic to melanoma, stomach, throat, bone, brain and liver cancers in lab studies. And in one new fascinating population study out of Jordan, where people eat figs regularly, one serving of this super-fruit daily was shown to reduce colon cancer risk by a stunning 49%. Figs are delicious fresh or dried (but the fresh fruit delivers about twice the polyphenols) and make a great snack any time of day. And for those who are feeling stressed, figs might be the perfect natural cure: it was also found that fig extracts decreased anxiety and had a mild muscle-relaxant effect.

Kidney cleansing

The importance of maintaining a healthy, clean kidney cannot be overemphasized. Healthy kidneys are essential to a variety of body functions. Your kidneys help detoxify your blood by removing toxic compounds and passing them out through the urine. If blood cleansing becomes impeded, toxins can remain and circulate throughout the body to cause harm.

We do not support diets, and ‘fads’. Going vegan shall keep your body as healthy as it can possibly be, and with good variety of plant based sources, including the below listed ingredients, shall naturally supports your kidneys, and will help keep them functioning at their best.

The Function of the Kidneys:

Healthy kidneys help manage body fluid stability by regulating the balance of sodium and water. The kidneys also manage the balance between alkalinity and acidity, and they regulate the hormones and enzymes responsible for controlling blood pressure. In addition, as mentioned previously, your kidneys help filter out toxins that build up in response to diet and the environment. The imbalance of body water caused by toxic kidneys has been linked to negative emotional states, such as stress, paranoia, uncontrolled muscle shaking, general feelings of insecurity and fear, and even panics attacks. Kidney cleansing helps promote the optimal function of the kidneys. When in optimal health, your kidneys can purify your blood up to 60 times per day.

Teas That Cleanse the Kidneys:

There are many teas that you can brew yourself that will help cleanse your kidneys.

Dandelion root removes excess water from the body by stimulating urine production. Dandelion root tea can be made by boiling 1 to 2 tsp of organic roasted dandelion root in 8 ounces of pure water.

Ginger root and turmeric tea can be made by boiling a few dashes of turmeric powder with peeled ginger root. If consumed after lunch and dinner, the tea not only flushes toxins from the kidneys but also helps with digestion.

Cleansing with Fruits and Vegetables:

You can also find many organic fruits that will help your body with kidney cleansing.  Juice cleanses are all the rage, and with good reason. A juice cleanse combines the nutritional power of fruits and vegetables into one, easy-to-drink beverage. The juice of vegetables and fruits is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients necessary for facilitating the removal of toxins. This helps take the strain off the liver, colon, and kidneys. Vegetables like celery, cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, carrots, kale, and spinach are great for juicing. For fruits, try apples, peeled oranges, pears, pineapple, and peaches.

Organic grapes can be eaten raw to provide nutrients and antioxidants that support detoxification. Grapes help flush uric acid and other waste products from the kidneys.

Organic cranberries provide us with quinine, a compound that is sent to the liver. Hippuric acid, which is converted from quinine, helps remove urea and uric acid from the kidneys and urinary tract. It also helps discourage bacteria from attaching to urinary tract walls. Cranberry juice is a great kidney supporter.  Cranberry juice has been touted for years as supporter for the urinary tract. Research shows that cranberries can help fight against urinary tract infections, possibly by decreasing the adhesion of bacteria to the bladder and urethra. Cranberries may also be helpful for cleansing the kidneys of excess calcium oxalate, one of the main contributors to kidney stones. When purchasing cranberry juice, always choose varieties that are certified organic and free of added sugars, preservatives, or artificial flavours; or, get a juicer and make your own.

Organic apples are one of the best natural foods you can eat, and they also support natural cleansing.

Beet juice is another great addition to help you cleanse your entire body.  Beets and beet juice contain betaine, a very beneficial phytochemical. It has antioxidant qualities and increases the acidity of urine. This can help clear calcium phosphate and struvite buildup from the kidneys. The removal of calcium in the kidneys not only promotes kidney function, but decreases the likelihood of kidney stones.

Naturally acidic, lemon juice has been shown to increase citrate levels in the urine, a factor that discourages kidney stones from forming. For a quick lemon kidney cleanse, squeeze 4-5 lemons into a quart of cold water and drink up. Or, for a warming beverage, squeeze one quarter to one half a lemon into 8 ounces of hot water daily.

There are also several organic cleansing vegetables that are readily available in almost every grocery store.

Garlic is a natural diuretic that helps stimulate urine production and flush out the kidneys.

Cucumbers also work as a natural diuretic and can help dissolve kidney and bladder stones.

Sprouts help flush out the kidneys because they contain so much water.

Onions have been reputed to help people pass kidney stones. The onions are boiled, then liquefied in a blender along with the water they were cooked in. Raw onion is also great in juices in small amounts.

Kidney beans, soybeans, and peas contain a vital amino acid called arginine that helps cleanse the kidneys of ammonia.

A General Rule of Thumb:

Eating pure, whole, and raw foods will provide the necessary support for your kidneys as well as every other detoxifying organ in your body. Most raw leafy greens, low-sugar fruits (think berries), and nuts and seeds can support your health in numerous ways, not just for cleansing. Also, it is imperative that you drink enough pure, filtered water every day in order to provide an easier route for toxins to evacuate your kidneys. You can use distilled water for this purpose; simply add 1 tbsp. of raw apple cider vinegar to an 8-ounce glass to give it an extra boost.

The kidneys are our organs that filter out toxins and waste from the bloodstream. Because toxins can affect your entire body, there is no question that supporting your kidneys is crucial for keeping your overall health in check. Without a balanced diet, purified drinking water, and body cleansing, toxins can build up and affect the function of the kidneys, liver, and neighbouring organs, and may even lead to kidney stones and other problems. Cleansing the kidneys is a simple process and most cleanses don’t require an exhaustive supply of tools or ingredients to work. In fact, just drinking plenty of purified water is the first step toward an effective flush. Water, however, only provides hydration. So do give your kidney that extra added boost by eliminating all animal ‘products’ from your plates, and filling up your shopping carts with a variety of organic plant based foods.

Healthy, happy, vegan dog.

Innocent victims of dog food negligence.

Legal loophole: pet food companies have dangerous preservatives added before they receive the ‘raw’ products to exploit a legal loophole. Pet foods labels as chemical and preservative free are actually choc full of deadly poisons.

All animal derived commercial dog foods are garbage.

Before materials used for pet food are shipped from the slaughterhouse to the rendering plant, the by- product is ‘denatured’. This means that crude carbolic acid, cresylic disinfectant and citronella is sprayed on the product

The most powerful and toxic preservative, called ethoxyquin, linked to cancers, allergies and immune system collapse is not listed in the ingredients label, because ‘pet ‘ food companies don’t have to let you know about dangerous chemicals added before they receive the ‘raw’ products.

Please don’t let ignorant tragedy become your own. Years of research through dog experts, vets and dog owners from all over the world  on commercial dog food and proper canine health and nutrition has proved  that major dog food companies fill their brands with toxic processed foods also containing preservatives to increase its shelf life and maximise their profits. The preservatives found in some commercial dog food could destroy your dogs kidneys and other organs. Preservatives are not the only reason that dog food kills dogs.

If you think that foods that you buy with foods labels that say they are chemical and preservative free makes them safe, then think again.

Commercial dog food contains at least 6 dangerous chemicals which are banned from human foods because they cause kidney cancer, stomach cancer, bladder cancer, skin cancer, spleen cancer, leukaemia, liver dysfunction, major organ failure, immune system collapse, severe allergic reactions, blindness, chronic diarrhea, hair loss, behaviour problems including increased aggressiveness.

Another dirty trick pet food companies pull on us as well as on our companion friends:

Your dogs food contains pets  (cat’s and dog’s), killed by lethal injection.  The city of L.A alone sends some 200 tons of euthanized cats and dogs to a pet food plant every month.  The true horror is the drug used to kill these stray and abandoned animals, called sodium pentobarbital, is not broken down by the manufacturing process and is still present in active form in your dogs food.

Some veterinarians and animal advocates have known about the dangers of sodium pentobarbital residue in commercial pet food, yet the danger has not been alleviated.

The euthanized pets are thrown into the rendering vats still with their collars, ID tags and plastic bags they arrive in.

Dog food companies don’t stop with pets.

Your dog is also eating euthanized animals from zoos, animal control and putrid, decaying road kill scraped off the road with a shovel, as well as left over animal parts from slaughter facilities whom have been fed and injected with various chemicals.

Can it get any worse than that?

All of these dead animals and other ghastly materials are processed until the portion left over for dog food is a brown powder, which consists of 25% fecal matter.

Pet food is a 13 billion dollar ultra competitive industry.

The pet food industry is dominated by gigantic companies with thousands of shareholders, who care about share prices and profits, first and foremost not your dog.

Does any of the above actions from dog food companies sound respectful to your dogs! Do you still trust the dog food ads featuring smiling vets and dog breeders telling you the food they present is everything that your dog needs?

If you continue to feed your dog on commercial animal derived pet food, you are dooming them to a painful, traumatic death, an innocent death.

3 step solution

Stop using animal derived commercial dog food as your only or main source of food. This step is the most important and you ought to make the switch within the next couple of days.  But you can’t make this change unless you have a good alternative plan of action in place.

Also learn how to read all commercial dog food labels. The grocery Manufacturers Of America, the National Food Processors Association, and The Pet Food Institute join together and lobby against the FDA to keep the labelling terms used as confusing and misleading as possible. Make the switch to a reputable vegan dog food label gradually but as soon as possible.

Get some healthy , well balanced vegan dog food recipes and start feeding your dog healthy, home made vegan food. It’s very easy if you know how to specifically cook for dogs.  You can even cook a large batch and then freeze portions which can be eaten over several days or even over a couple of weeks.  But we sure to have a good source of recipes written as they have specific requirements.

Just because your dog is still smiling and is not complaining doesn’t mean that you’re feeding him well or doing the right thing. He trusts you 100% . Let’s honour that trust and put to practice what we preach.

Embrace the little avo!

Avocado is one of the world’s most perfect foods. It is easily digested and contains over 25 essential nutrients including iron, copper, magnesium, and essential fatty acids that help the body to function optimally. Avocados increase the body’s ability to assimilate nutrients, so they are a wonderful addition to green leafy salads to ensure proper absorption of all the vitamins and minerals. They are also an excellent source of glutathione which helps to boost the immune system, strengthen the heart, rebuild the nervous system, and slow the aging process. The monounsaturated fats in avocados reverse insulin resistance which helps to steady blood sugar levels. Due to its nutritional profile, it is one of the closest foods to mother’s breast milk, being a complete and easily assimilable food with protein ratios that are equal to breast milk. Avocados are high in folate which is essential for women in childbearing years and is also known to aid in preventing strokes and reducing the risk of heart disease. Try adding a few avocados to your diet each week and enjoy the benefits of this delicious and health promoting food.

Blueberries for health!

Ever tasted a Blue Berry? Liked its tangy taste? Yes? Then you will absolutely love them even more once you finish reading this stuff. Before we proceed, allow us to give you a short introduction of Blue Berries, for those who have never tasted or seen one, and also for those who know them well.

Blue Berry is a fruit belonging to Vaccinium family with two well known types. First one is the wild or the low-bush Blue Berry bearing the scientific name ‘vaccinium angustifolium’ and the second one, the ‘vaccinium corymbosum’, is commonly known as the cultivated or the high-bush Blue Berry. There is one more type but that is not so well known. Its scientific name is ‘vaccinium pallidum’.

Ailments, causes and healing effect of Blue Berries:

Leaving aside the genetic factor, for which there is no apparent solution, if we consider the effect of free radicals on aging, then Blue Berries bring you the brightest ray of hope, for they are laden with anti oxidants and rank number 1 in the world of anti oxidants. This is mainly due to presence of Anthocyanin, a pigment responsible for the blue color of the blue berries. The abundance of vitamin-C is also a big factor for this as well.

Urinary Tract Infection:

The building of colonies of certain bacteria like b-coli along the lining of the inner walls of urinary tract is responsible for this infection, resulting in inflammation, burning sensation during in passage of urine and other complications. Here, Blue Berries can be surprisingly beneficial. It has a compound formed of big polymer like heavy molecules which inhibits the growth of such bacteria. It also has some anti biotic properties which adds to this effect. These heavy and big molecules almost wash-off these bacteria along the tract, thereby preventing the infection. So far, this compound is found only in Cranberries and Blue Berries.

Eye Care & Macular Degeneration:

Blue Berry is one of the best alternatives for spectacles, contact-lenses, eye-drops, medicines and eye surgeries. They can prevent or delay all age related ocular problems like macular degeneration, cataract, myopia and hypermetropia, dryness and infections, particularly those pertaining to retina, due to their anti-oxidant properties. Macular degeneration is a serious problem where the retina of the eye degenerate gradually, ultimately leading to complete or partial blindness. No! I am certainly not telling you to put them in your eyes. Instead, you can just do well eating them. Blue Berries contain a special group of anti oxidants called Carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin etc.), Flavonoids (like rutin, resveritrol, quercetin etc.), in addition to others such as vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin A, selenium, zinc and phosphorus, which are very beneficial and essential for the ocular health.

Brain Function, Memory & Alzheimer’s disease:

Again, the anti oxidative properties of Blue Berries. The anthocyanin, the selenium, the vitamins A, B-complex, C and E, the zinc, sodium, potassium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese etc., among others, can prevent and heal neurotic disorders by preventing degeneration and death of neurons, brain-cells and also by restoring health of the central nervous system. It is hard to believe that these berries can also cure serious problems like Alzheimer’s disease to a great extent. They even heal damaged brain cells and neuron tissues and keep your memory sharp for a long-long time.

Constipation & Digestion:

While roughage (fiber) in Blue Berries keep away constipation (Of course, a single piece alone will not do. You need to eat a big handful of them), the vitamins, sodium, copper, fructose and acids improve digestion.

Blue Berries can prove to be bliss for the cancer patients, for they contain certain compounds like Pterostilbene (excellent remedy for colon and liver cancer) and Ellagic Acid which, in harmony with Anthocyanin and other anti oxidants like vitamin-C and copper, can do miracles to prevent and cure cancer.

Heart Disease:

The high fiber content, those brilliant anti oxidants and the ability to dissolve the ‘bad cholesterol’ make the Blue Berry an ideal dietary supplement to cure many heart diseases. It also strengthens the cardiac muscles.

Blue Berries, being very rich in anti oxidants like Anthocyanin, vitamin C, B complex, vitamin E, vitamin A, copper (a very effective immune builder and anti-bacterial), selenium, zinc, iron (promotes immunity by raising haemoglobin and oxygen concentration in blood) etc. boost up your immune system and prevent infections. Once your immunity is strong, you won’t catch colds, fever, pox and all such nasty viral and bacterial communicable diseases.

Other benefits & facts:

They keep you fresh, active, fit, sharp, close to nature and in a good mood, as they are  very good anti depressants. You also need not spend a lot on medicines, neither are there any side effects. Here, there is an interesting thing to know. The deeper the color of the Blue Berries, the more they are rich in anti oxidants and other medicinal values.
So, eat them until your tongue turns blue and live a healthy long and strong life !

We would love to know about the positive effects that blueberries have on your life. Do share your recipes with us!
